In short, everything mentioned in the PC article mostly holds true here. This is an action game that doesn’t require thought. Just move and shoot all the demonic bad guys that pop into view. There is no reloading, barely a need to jump, and a need to collect keys to open doors all within a linear path. Even though it is simple, it is still mindlessly enjoyable. The demonic theme is trying to be so serious that it actually comes across as B-movie tier comical. For a game entirely based around killing demons, it is not scary at all.
Although I am focusing on the Xbox Series version here in this article, I also played through the PS5 version previously. Unfortunately, this XSX version is buggier than its counterparts. Achievements wouldn’t pop. I encountered some saving issues, and the game even crashed on me, suddenly booting me back to the home screen. Hopefully a patch will be available in the future. If not, the PS5 version is the more stable build in my opinion.
The speed of the gameplay is also fast. Like, faster than Quake fast but with the ridiculousness of Serious Sam. I actually recommend turning down both the X and Y sensitivity settings in the main menu, a thankfully implemented feature. Once these settings are toggled to a lower setting, more precision is given.
As previously mentioned, there is no plot outside of nicely hand drawn comic book visuals during the opening. There are no noteworthy set pieces but there is variety in the enemy types. Granted, you will kill hundreds of each type by the time you see the credits roll but at least each baddie has different attack patterns and movesets. There are some boss battles too but they mostly just throw throngs of the little guys at you.
If this Xbox version was a little more stable, then it would be much easier to recommend especially since there are tons of easy unlockable Achievements to be earned. This is one of those games where Achievements can be unlocked faster than it takes for each one to play the popping animation. Either way, this boomer shooter is a straightforward action shooter in which you can turn off your mind and just blast the crap out of everything. There isn’t much depth but sometimes this is exactly the type of game you need.
