Cattie (XSX) Review

Cattie is another low-cost, simple 2D platformer published by EastAsiaSoft. It lacks replay value, but the easy-going challenge is a casual way to burn an hour and earn all the big-point Achievements.

Presented in a 1-bit visual style while playing as a cat, the goal is to simply reach the exit of each stage. A jumps and X attacks. Although the reach is rather limited, it is nice to have an offensive attack as many other EastAsiaSoft platformers like Cattie are defensive only. Wall jumps also make the platforming more satisfying albeit a little sticky at times.

To quickly summarize, there isn’t much to the gameplay. Just avoid traps, defeat the enemies if you want, and jump on the occasional moving platform. There is no optional item to collect, secrets to find, or high scores to earn. Granted, controlling the cat feels accurate complete with jumps that can be adjusted depending how long the button is held.

The difficulty remains casual throughout but does grow over time. Eventually, keys will need to be collected to unlock door, robots will shoot at you (who shoots at a cat?), and conveyor belts will be involved. So even though you are doing the same thing, essentially running and jumping with the occasional paw slap, things slightly change over time.

There are just a couple of annoyances that are worth mentioning. First, it isn’t possible to jump on vertically moving platforms. This caused me several uncalled-for deaths as I wanted to leap just before it reached the top. However, Cattie’s jump will only trigger when that platform has reached the top, pausing for a second when at its peak. Also, the one-track soundtrack is fine but gets repetitive quickly, especially since this is the only track that plays during the campaign.

There are 100 levels in total, but you only need to complete the first 50 to unlock all the Achievements. Plus, after stage 50, the game revisits the same stages but forces the player to play them in reverse. It is an interesting concept but still slightly repetitive. Even though there is nothing special about this low cost digital download, this is one of the better, simple 2D platformers EastAsiaSoft has released in a while mostly due to the accurate controls, friendly difficulty factor, and charming art style.

A simple 2D 1-bit platformer, Cattie lacks replay value but makes up for it with accurate controls, a charming art style, and only costs a few bucks with easy Achievements.
