Dragon’s Dogma 2 Preview: Fire, Foes and Fables

It was 2012 when Capcom released the first Dragon’s Dogma game and has since left gamers crying out for a sequel. Now, 12 years later, fans of the initial installment are finally having their prayers answered with a long awaited follow-up to the widely esteemed game about to hit the shelves.

Set to release on March, 22, 2024, it has been a long and painful wait but fans will take some solstice in the fact that it’s now only ten days away. Read on to discover what’s known about the soon-to-land title.

Will Dragon’s Dogma 2 be Canonical from the First?

Despite the sharing of names, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will not be a direct sequel, or follow on from the events of the first game. According to the game’s director, Hideaku Itsuno, the game will revolve around the rather convenient narrative thread of amnesia – a tried and tested route for returning franchises.

That’s not to say that the game won’t be similar to the first. In fact, Capcom have reused ideas that were first seen in the 2012 hit. Dragon’s Dogma 2 will return to the familiar landscapes (albeit on a much larger scale) and we will once again have minions following us around as we hack, slash and shoot our way to the game’s dramatic end.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Promises a Sprawling Open World

Fans of open-world games will be happy to know that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to feature a huge map. First planned to double the explorable world from the first game, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will now take place in a map that quadruples the size of that which we saw in the original game.

This is indeed a bold move and will open the game up to extraordinary extents; giving ample opportunity for deep exploration and discovery, coupled with the introduction of more variation to both different areas of maps and enemies indigenous to those reasons.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Platforms

Despite its predecessor having been a console exclusive and only available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be an adventure for all. Alongside the inevitable release on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S consoles, PC gamers will be happy to know that this time around the game will reach the Steam library.

Sadly, this is where the good news ends. Those that were hopeful for a release to the Xbox and PC Game Pass subscription services will be disappointed to learn that there are no plans for a Day One release, at the time of writing.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Vocations

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will feature an eclectic mix of eight vocations. Players will be sure to find a style that perfectly suits their playstyle and combat needs. Choose from Fighter, Archer, Thief, Mage, Warrior, Majick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster and Warfarer, as you prepare to embark on a magically immersive adventure.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Summary

Fantasy RPGs have always held their own place in my heart. Having been a fan of this genre for as long back as I can remember, it’s needless to say that I’m hyped up for the game’s eventual release. With the first game gaining so many fans, I can’t wait to see how the sequel plays with the technology available in current generation consoles and PCs.
