Ghost Teen Escape from Limbo (XSX) Review

Ghost Teen Escape from Limbo is another simple, low-cost, single-screened platformer published by EastAsiaSoft. The goal is to reach the exit in each of the 50 stages but there is a gimmick in completing each stage – you need to die.

This is a puzzle platformer. Meaning, players need to figure out how to reach the exit as opposed to relying on quick platforming reflexes. On occasion, timing is important, like jumping with just enough leeway to avoid landing on spikes, but this is more of an exception. Instead, players get three hearts per stage and taking damage reduces the heart count but also turns the teenage boy into a ghost. When in ghost form, it is possible to move/float in any direction and move through certain tiles. However, it is impossible to collect the stage ending key and walk through the exit when in ghost form. By bumping into a gravestone as a ghost, the teenager reverts back to human form.

So yes, taking intentional damage is required to clear most stages. It is an interesting mechanic that doesn’t have time to overstay its welcome since clearing the 50 stages shouldn’t take more than an hour. Achievements are also tied to natural progression, unlocking one big point Gamerscore every few stages. Like most EastAsiaSoft games, Achievement hunters will want to take note.

Ghost Teen Escape from Limbo isn’t a challenging game and remains casual throughout. The simple 2-tone visual style is also pleasant, but the single continuously looping musical track will require deactivation after the first ten stages. My only other complaint comes from the physics of the pushable boxes; they move a bit too loosely, making it tedious to put the boxes onto the buttons. But these are minor gripes in comparison to an overall basic, simple, puzzle platformer.
