Hirilun (XSX) Review

Hirilun

Published by Ratalaika Games and available on all major platforms, Hirilun is a monochrome time-based platformer with a difficult to pronounce name. The goal is to get through the intricate obstacle courses in the shortest amount of time to earn a 3-star ranking.

Unfortunately, this time-trail-based first person platformer is unplayable for me as there is no option to invert the camera. Since I cannot invert, I cannot see where I am going and immediately get frustrated. Making matters worse, to unlock level 2, you need to ace level 1 and there is zero chance of that happening since I cannot control the camera. Even if it is a low-cost indie release, it is unacceptable to release a game in 2023, especially a first-person title, without an option to invert the camera. This should be the first option implemented in pretty much every game in which the camera can be controlled.

Since it is impossible for me to make any progress because of this, I cannot speak to the anything more than the first stage, which has the player falling more than platforming (which is actually pretty cool). It is a shame because I think I would have liked this title otherwise. So if you are a non-camera inverter, I think it would be worth a shot as stages often have more than one path. Dashing, sprinting, and gliding can be spent in limited quantities so it would be interesting to see how dedicated players use these abilities to reach the fastest times. Rings can be grabbed to temporality stop the timer and become critical to unlocking that best rating. Online leaderboard keeps the competition steady.

Since my brain doesn’t work without an invert camera option, I have to give this game an unplayable low score and I know I am not the only one out there that needs invert. However, if this title ever gets patched, I would definitely want to revisit it because seems like it could be a fun but demanding game.

A time-based first-person obstacle course navigator, Hirilun doesn’t have an option to invert the camera so it will be unplayable to some (like me) but it is easy to see how this could be enjoyable if you to intro shaving milliseconds off perfect runs.
