Point a Lot, Click a Lot, Cootalot Thank goodness for crowdfunding. Without crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and Gofundme, we might never have had the chance to experience games in genres long forgotten by the movers and shakers in the industry. One such title is Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet, a point-and-click adventure to stand among the many great point-and-click adventures currently on the Switch. Nelly herself is a gem, a wonderfully able pirate who is after the Treasure of the Seventh Sea. Through trying to thwart the pirate Baron Widebeard, she finds herself in different settings and interacting with a variety of characters, all of whom were distinct and interesting. As is the norm for games of this ilk, you’ll have to spend some…
A Legend Well Told Pixel art indie titles are at an all-time high. It’s doubtful that comes as a surprise to you, avid gamer that you are, but I find myself getting pixel fatigue scrolling through the eshop, looking for something new to play. It comes as a delight, then, when a title couples this trite presentation with refreshing originality and more importantly, personality. Enter the dungeon, the dandiest dungeon you’re likely to traverse, in the aptly titled Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada, brought to us by publisher and developer Onion Games. Billed as a rougelite RPG, the majority of the gameplay follows a simple formula. In each floor of the current dungeon, which is laid out in a grid, there is an exit…
New Platform, Same Puzzles Hats off to Hexologic developer MythicOwl. They’ve taken they’re cute Sudoku-inspired puzzler from a mobile game, to Nintendo Switch and PC last year, and finally to Xbox One. It’s no mean feat to make the jump from a mobile app store to a bona fide console marketplace (with a price increase, might I add) and have enough people buy in to continue churning out the ports. I had the pleasure of reviewing the Switch port last year, and you can hear what I had to say about it here. For the purposes of this review, I will focus on what this Xbox One port brings to the table. You can read our review of the Switch version of Hexologic HERE. For…
Starved for Fun It’s no secret that I’m a huge party game fan. In my opinion, gaming reached a certain peak right around the time that couch multiplayer reigned supreme. It was a simpler time, back when four controllers and a couple large pizzas were all you needed for a memorable game night. It seems that developer Digital Melody has not forgotten those days, and seeks to bring us back around the TV together, or the Nintendo Switch screen, rather, with their latest title Hungry Baby: Party Treats. On a system that is already awash with plenty of party game options, how does this one fare? I’ve always been of the mind that party games thrive on simplicity. Give me just enough nuance to keep…
Colonize me, captain! I often think about the robot revolution. What will happen when the latest advances in AI causes machines to overthrow the squishy flesh bags that make up the human race? They’ll probably take one look at the pitiful state of the world, and just decide to start over. Enter The Colonists, in which an army of robots, tasked with obtaining resources for humans, make the decision to just gather resources for themselves and disregard their overlords. Honestly, it’s hard to blame them. Each level begins the same: the robots touch down on an alien world and begin to build. Just build and build and build. In order to do all this building, resources are needed, much like the real world. Once the…
