Mullet Madjack is the debut title from the fresh but vastly talented minds of Hammer95. Comprising of just three developers, the team share a love for the nineties anime aesthetic and have made it their mission to bring back the days of old and re-introduce the retro vibes. If this ethos isn’t enough to win you over, their first game certainly will.
The Story Behind Mullet Madjack
In-your-face action and cheese were the two main ingredients to nineties entertainment and Hammer95 have perfectly encapsulated this in every nook and cranny of their opening game.
Mullet Madjack takes place in a sixty-story building, with each floor being its own level. The aim of the game is to ascend the building to save a damsel in distress, who has been kidnapped by a robotic billionaire, intent on performing an occult ritual on her. The premise alone slaps you on the cheek and yells “NINETIES” in your face, as your heart is filled with that perfect brand of nostalgia we all covet.
During your heroic ascent, your deeds will be livestreamed by a plucky host as she provides a running commentary on your progress. This game show vibe is made even more interesting to the viewing masses by a countdown timer that’s always running. Starting at just ten seconds, you need to kill your enemies in the coolest way possible to add valuable seconds and keep you in the game.
Mullet Madjack: Full-Throttle Thrills and Kickass Kills
There’s no better way to describe Mullet Madjack than “beautifully intense”. The action is non-stop, fast and all-out as you race through the corridors notching up your body count and keeping the timer from expiring. The retro graphical style perfectly melds with the adrenaline-inducting action, adding to the air of being the ultimate badass.
A boss waits to meet you at every tenth level and fresh hazards are introduced after each and every one. Laser beams, toxic floor and flying obstacles add variety to the game and how you play it. Utilize hazards to take down your enemies for bonus points or fall foul of their deadly ways.
After each floor you will be given the opportunity to buy some upgrades to assist you on your warpath. Receive new weapons, add seconds on to your timer, unlock exploding bullets and “nutshot” bonuses to fortify your one-man army.
Mullet Madjack rewards the player for thinking outside the box when it comes to your chosen way of obliterating your adversaries. Shooting a guy in the head or family jewels will give you a two-second time increase, where the countless environment kill options will offer double that. It’s a pretty neat way of keeping you thinking on your toes and the more you get used to it, the better it feels to play. Starting out on the standard difficulty level, it wasn’t long before I was trying my hand at the harder difficulties. While challenging, I found it to be the perfect way to hone my skills and become a better player. There is also a “no timer” option available for the more casual gamer.
