Stand and Protect –
The biggest gimmick behind the Wii U is the tablet-like Gamepad. This special controller is responsible for the majority of the cost of a Wii U so it only makes sense to want to project it. In fact, Nintendo does not even offer replacement/extra Gamepads at retail so keeping this unique and pricey controller protected should be taken into consideration for every Wii U owner.
Like Microsoft’s Kinect, Wii U owners are forced to spend the extra dough whether they like it or not for a controller that isn’t fully realized yet. Luckily, Rocketfish has concerned gamers covered with their InvisiShell product. This clear plastic case protects the Gamepad while still allowing for full access to all the controller’s features and also includes a kickstand.
Even though a small single page instruction manual is included, the InvisiShell is easy to use and uninstall. Using hinged tabs at the base of the unit, everything locks into place; just place the Gamepad inside, close it, and lock it up. Simple. Removing the Gamepad is just as easy. Just unsnap the hinges at the bottom. It only takes five seconds to install/uninstall and should be familiar ground for any case using smart phone user.
Besides obviously protecting the pricey controller the other key feature is the built-in kickstand. This is actually a very handy feature and main reason why I purchased this product. For example, Pikmin 3 makes gameplay more seamless by including a map feature on the Gamepad’s screen. However, using the analog stick control scheme is not as fluid as using a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Instead of playing with the Gamepad on my lap while holding the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, propping the controller next to me using this kick stand would have been way more convenient. It is also worth pointing out that the kick stand is also solid. As long as you have an even surface, this unit should never fail.
The casing itself is rather simple and straightforward. It just a clear plastic casing that will function exactly the same whether you have the white or black colored Gamepad. It is sturdy and luckily does not add much weight to surprising lightweight Gamepad. It also will fit when using the Gamepad’s charging cradle without any issue.
The complaints with this unit are few. First, if you ever need to change the controller’s battery you will need to remove this casing but this is no big deal. Second, holding the controller while the kickstand is in the out position is a little awkward as it interferes where hands are normally placed. It isn’t really a make-or-break deal though as the kick stand can be locked away with a simple instant push though. Finally, there is only one kickstand level. It would have been nice to lock the stand at different angles but for the low cost it is hard to complain.
Normally this unit retails for $9.99. However, I was able to find this unit for only $1.99 in BestBuy’s clearance section. For only a couple of bucks, this is a no brainer. If you are looking for a kick stand and want to protect your investment when perhaps playing with younger gamers, then the $10 investment could also be worthwhile depending on your needs.
Not As Good As: having a built-in kickstand already installed in the Gamepad
Better Than: having a naked, unprotected Gamepad
Also Try: just being careful
