Sam and Max Devil’s Playground Remastered (PC) Review

After nearly a decade and a half, the cult franchise game, Sam and Max: Devil’s Playground is finally being given a fresh lick of paint and a complete under-the-bonnet overhaul. Based on the award winning comics by Steve Purcell, the anthropomorphic bunny and dog duo, the modernized title will be a remake of the original Sam and Max: Devil’s Playground that hails from 2010.

Sam and Max: Devil’s Playground – Storyline

Ever the “crazy” one in the Freelance Police, Max has always been known to be a wildcard; an unhinged but lovable volunteer policeman, renowned for spreading chaos and mayhem everywhere he lays his paws. However, things take an even more bizarre turn as our favorite bonkers bunny is plunged into a world of supernatural carnage.

The events of Sam and Max: Devil’s Playground explode when he happened upon a supernatural toy that allows Max to see into the future. Alas, as any supernatural toy would, the plaything soon attracted the attention from supervillains from all over the galaxy, who want nothing more than to lay their greedy hands on “The Toys of Power”, to meet their own sinister ends.

As those who covet the Devil’s Toolbox begin to close in, Max’s psychic abilities begin to spiral out of control and the Freelance Police are plunged into the weirdest place possible; the very recesses of Max’s warped mind.

The game plays out as a puzzling point and click adventure and is full to the brim of interesting characters and follows an intricate story that takes the turbulent twosome through a series of twists and turns. It’s a relaxing experience, packed with wonder, intrigue and wholesome fun that will keep players of all ages on the edge of their seats as the events unfold.

Helpfully, Sam and Max Devil’s Playground has a useful, built-in feature that detects if a player is stuck to a point where they can’t progress and drops contributive hints at where to go, what to do, or who to speak to. This element takes away any stresses and confusion, without being too obvious. It’s a perfect system, especially for the younger gamer that may need a little helping hand from time to time.

A Total Overhaul

The game has been given the complete treatment too; lighting effects have been brought up-to-date, lip-syncing has been added along with cinematography and music. The highly esteemed developers, Telltale Games have really gone all out to bring us the best possible remake of a widely loved game.

Required Specifications for PC

Despite how good the game looks and plays, Sam and Max Devil’s Playground doesn’t require a bank-breaking supercomputer to run. In fact, even those with the most basic of systems (to an extent) will be able to enjoy the fascinating adventure of the gaming world’s favorite crime-fighting animals.

The news of this title will have been music to the ears of the vast hordes of fans of the older games and will undoubtedly bring in new fans as word of mouth spreads a little. Whether or not this is them dipping their toes into the proverbial waters is unclear, but it may just open the team at Telltale up for a fourth, brand new franchise installment.
