GTX 980 and GTX 970

I'm looking to build a new PC the summer that comes next and since Intel made me cry for not releasing its Skylake processors in the summer as planed (won't getting them now ), I want to hear your opinion on these two graphic cards. I hear that they're a good investement, especially the GTX 980. What is your opinion about these GPUs?

Apparently, you can buy two 970s and SLI them to get the same performance as a 990 at a lower price... So says my brother who is looking to build his own PC this summer as well. I myself have a GTX 770 and it's been working rather fine, but as a newcomer I'd recommend going with what will give the most performance for the most time without having to worry about replacing too much should something go wrong.
