Go Go Jump!!! (XSX) Review

Published by EastAsiaSoft, Go Go Jump!!! is a simple timed-based boss gauntlet. Playing as Dylan the dog, the goal is to survive each boss’s jump trial to earn badges. The plot is comical and often breaks the fourth wall while the high res 2D visuals feel like playing a cartoon.

Using only the analog stick to move left/right and one button to jump, gameplay is entirely based on timing jumps to avoid the attacks from each boss. In other words, tons of trial-and-error and memorization is required. It is important to read the subtle tells of each boss but it is never easy as it always demands quick reaction time. Even when fighting bosses with one-star difficulty, expect die a couple dozen times before you finally get it right. Don’t be surprised if you die within the first second of a match too. One mistake sends the player back to the start but there are checkpoints. Thankfully, boss patterns are not randomized so each fight essentially becomes a game of Simon, you know, that game where you must hit the colors in order, growing with one tap each round.

While I understand the appeal and appreciate the humorous writing, I only had patience to defeat one boss with each play session. The demanding memorization-based gameplay can only be tolerated in short bursts. Each boss is also different than the last so there is plenty of variety even though the player is only performing one action, jumping, for the entire game. For true diehards, there is also a boss rush mode and optional mini jump challenges to complete if you enjoy the punishing gameplay.

Go Go Jump!!! isn’t a bad game, it just isn’t for everyone. Since perfection is required, be warned that a high tolerance for failure is necessary.

SCORE

For a game based around jumping over boss attacks, gameplay is fiercely demanding, requiring large amount of trial and error. Anything less than perfection will not be tolerated.
