SokoPenguin (XSX) Review

SokoPenguin is another low-cost, easy Achievement unlocking, casual Sokoban title published by EastAsiaSoft. It only costs five bucks and takes about an hour to clear but there are worse ways to spend your time and money.

Controlling a penguin on a tile-based grid, it is your job to reach the exit point. Getting to the goal, however, requires the precise pushing of blocks to clear paths, make bridges, and even power cells to open doors. There is also a very slight Bomberman aspect as bombs need to be pushed to destroy rocks in later stages. Uniquely, the penguin can also push several boxes at once which comes into play throughout the campaign; he is not limited to moving one block at a time. But to quickly summarize, yeah, this is a simple Sokoban game. Nothing you have not played before. I appreciate its low level of difficulty too.

At the time of this review, there are 100 stages in total, but the player only needs to clear the first 75 to unlock all the Achievements. However, EastAsiaSoft has been patching their games weeks after release, increasing the total Gamerscore potential from 1,000 to 2,000 and beyond. I am willing to bet that this will be a 2,000 Gamerscore game soon so Achievement hunters will want to take note.

As simple and straightforward as the gameplay and presentation is, I have just a couple minor complaints. First, the music repeats and is maddening by level twenty. There is also no rewind feature. Granted, restarting is just an instant button push away but would have been nice to tap the LB to go back a few steps instead of restarting from scratch. To be fair, this game only costs five bucks and was made by a very small team.

SokoPenguin isn’t a bad game it is just… Sokoban. Straightforward. Nothing fancy. Right to the point, Sokoban. It isn’t designed to last long and there is no replay value, but I still moderately enjoyed by time with this stress-free downloadable title.

SCORE

Another casual, easy-going, low-cost Sokoban title only this time you play as penguin who can push several boxes at once, needs to place power cells on power plugs, and occasionally pushes bombs Bomberman-style… and sometimes he wears a new hat.
